The Big Match Revisited - Arsenal (A) 1977 - 2-3
Recorded this yesterday on Itv4

Feb 19th 1977.

West Ham United wearing their white with blue trim admiral away strip.

Two from Taylor and the other from Jennings.

Diving header winner from Taylor, should have had the hat trick.

Bonzo freshly shaven sporting a moustache, mentioned before ko by commentator Brian Moore.

Sir Trev involved in everything, also providing analysis in the studio.

Merv gloveless.

Crunching tackles, quagmire of a pitch, away support in fine voice.

Beautiful.

Good watch that, Dud, thanks.

Alan Taylor was prolific for a short period of time and I thought we had a top, top, striker on our hands, but alas, no.

Same with Mervyn Day. He somehow went from being touted as England's Number 1 for the next fifteen years to a journeyman in the lower leagues.

Kevin Lock is immense in this game.

I was at that match. Both Radford and Otulakowski, players who were never Really rated by our supporters, had good, solid matches and Radford laid on Jennings’ goal with his heading ability.

In those days the pre match and half-time entertainment at Highbury was provided by the Metropolitan Police Band, one of their number also used to sing a solo song. I remember at one match, it may even have been this one, where they were marching through the mud at half time and the leader with the mace was throwing it up in the air. Our lot kept on cheering every time he caught it, but hoping that he’d drop it.

I was also there,I loved going to Highbury, great football ground full of tradition. Mixed day for me,delighted with the win but managed to lose my last fiver whilst celebrating our 3rd.

As for Merv,I'm sure his decline began when he got 'chipped' from about 40 yards in a home game v Everton (Ronnie Goodlass?). After that, chants of 'stay on ya line Mervyn' could be heard at most of our games for a while.

We get it Northern Sold. You have posted the same thing about Day multiple times now. You're like a broken record. It wasn't funny the first time you posted it by the way.

This is the chipped goal you’re referring to. I was told that Mervs Mrs used to stop him going training and went down hill from there! Shame but he still ended up with f a cup medal and a couple of title medals including the top division! So not a complete disaster

Early promise being shown by a young Alan Devonshire as well.

Thanks for the link, Alfs.

Great to hear some of these stories. Sadly was way before my time. Makes me wish I was born a couple of decades earlier.

boleynkid - you wouldn't think it was the same man looking at dear Alan now!

Yes he has changed a bit.

A couple of players did warn him that Wimpy & Chips would be his downfall.

That's the one Paul, good find. Old Merv was more than ok up to that point,,shame as he showed bags of promise early in his career.

I recall there was incident right on half time when Mervyn Day took out an Arsenal striker who was clean through. Absolute nailed on penalty. The Ref waved play on then blew up for half time. The Arsenal player was incandescent as they walked off.

Another near-post goal. We invented the near-post cross, but never use it now, sadly.
